Driver killed in hit-and-run struck by suspect fleeing police in stolen vehicle
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For the second day in a row, an innocent person out on the roads has been the victim of a crash, resulting from a driver fleeing from police.
The crash on Wednesday, Nov. 1 hurt two people at Teutonia and Villard. Nearly 24 hours later, on Thursday, Nov. 2, a 32-year-old Wauwatosa woman was killed at 100th and Capitol. She was identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office Friday as Erin Mogensen.
Before the Capitol Drive accident, Wauwatosa police had tried to stop one of the vehicles because it had no license plates. It was later learned that the vehicle was stolen.
The driver sped off, ultimately striking the car of an innocent person at 100th and Capitol.
Surveillance captured the get-away driver running after the horrific crash at 10:40 a.m. that killed the Wauwatosa woman.
"I hear she was a mother, a wife and that's heartbreaking," said Tutricia Rush, who lives nearby.
The crash scene, becoming all too familiar, as the amount of reckless driving and stolen cars goes up.
"There's accidents up here at least once a week. I hear crashes all the time from my house," said Mary Harrell, who lives nearby.
Milwaukee police have engaged in 800 pursuits this year.
"It's very scary, it's very dangerous and to think that there's schools nearby and people trying to walk their dogs," said Harrell.
These are anxious days for people who live near the two recent crash sites. The one at 100th and Capitol, the other at Teutonia and Villard.
"Every day leaving out of my garage I have to say a prayer that I return home safely because the driving, the speeding is so horrendous," said Darrell Stone who lives nearby.
You afraid to get in your own car because you afraid what's gonna happen. You're afraid to cross the street cause they driving just reckless," said Debora Burnside, who also lives nearby.
Molly Aschauer moved to Milwaukee two months ago from West Bend. Recklessness on the roads caught her attention right away.
"It's crazy. So, there's a lot of zooming in and out of lanes. There's a lot of like no turn signals, going through stop lights when they're red when they shouldn't be, just a lot of unsafe driving," said Aschauer.
The victim was 32-year-old Erin Mogensen.
