10 Wisconsin-based businesses sue federal government, seek to recoup losses by tariffs imposed by Trump admin
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Ten Wisconsin-based businesses are suing the federal government, seeking to recoup losses from tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
On Friday, America's highest court ruled that many of President Donald Trump's tariffs, that invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, were unconstitutional, and that the president does not have the authority to tax, nor does that statute authorize the use of tariffs.
But this ruling came after those businesses already filed lawsuits in the U.S. Court of International Trade, looking for refunds of tariffs they paid.
Businesses include Kohl's, Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation, Weyco Group, and Ashley Furniture Industries.
The lawsuits, however, do not specify the amount of refunds each company is searching for.
Kohl's sent CBS 58 this statement which reads in full:
"Given the federal court decisions on IEEPA tariffs, Kohl's took this measure to protect the company's rights and interests as part of our fiduciary responsibility to our business and our shareholders. Our goal was to ensure we were appropriately positioned for any outcome, including the potential availability of refunds."
