MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 19-year-old man is accused of fleeing a traffic stop turned police pursuit and leaving his 10-month-old baby in the backseat of the vehicle.
The incident happened Sunday, Oct. 19, when Milwaukee police pulled over a silver Infiniti with no registration near 13th and Green Bay Avenue.
Police say the driver's side window did not work, so police opened the car door and saw a firearm between the driver's seat cushion and plastic frame of the vehicle.
According to a criminal complaint, the officer asked the driver if he had a CCW license which he stated he did not. At this point, officials say the front passenger of the vehicle -- identified as Devon Thompson -- attempted to shift the vehicle into drive and told the driver to, "drive," and "pull off."
Thompson reportedly was able to shift the vehicle into drive, prompting the driver to flee the traffic stop.
A pursuit began, lasting approximately .8 miles and reaching speeds of up to 104 mph. The chase ended when the fleeing vehicle crashed into a tree at Hampton Avenue and Milwaukee River Parkway.
The driver fled on foot.
Authorities say Thompson also exited the vehicle and attempted to enter the rear passenger side of the vehicle stating, "My baby!"
Thompson ultimately fled the scene without the child.
He was taken into custody a short distance away. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a collapsed lung.
The child was found inside the vehicle, lying face down in a child seat crying. The baby suffered minor scratches near his lip and on his nose from broken glass.
Thompson is now facing the following charges:
- Operating a motor vehicle to flee or in an attempt to elude an officer - as party to a crime
- Second degree recklessly endangering safety, as party to a crime (two counts)
- Obstructing an officer
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Neglecting a child - consequence is bodily harm
