Former correctional officers charged with misconduct, inmate abuse at Milwaukee County Jail

Rafael Gomez- Milwaukee County Sheriff\\\'s Office

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Two former Milwaukee County Jail correctional officers are facing charges after allegedly engaging in misconduct in office and abusing residents.

According to a criminal complaint, Correctional Sergeant Rafael Gomez and Correctional Officer Marques Reeder engaged in excessive use of force against an inmate by "punching him, spraying OC spray in his face, striking him with the OC cannister in the face, pulling his dreadlocks," and rubbing OC spray into his eyes.

The complaint says this happened while the inmate was handcuffed and initially secured to a bench.

Prosecutors say Sgt. Gomez also falsified a report completed during his employment as correctional staff, stating that he did not strike the inmate with a cannister of OC spray, but rather the inmate hit the cannister himself.

Reeder is also accused of abusing another inmate by using excessive force on the same date, at the same place.

Gomez faces the following charges:

  • Abuse of resident of penal facility
  • Misconduct in public office (Act in excess of lawful authority)
  • Misconduct in public office (False entry)

Reeder is charged with the following:

  • Abuse of resident of penal facility (Two counts)
  • Misconduct in public office -- Act in excess of lawful authority (Two counts)

They are due in court for initial appearances Jan. 22.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says both officers were still in their probationary employment phase and have been "separated from their employment."
