2 students struck by driver outside Hartford Union High School
HARTFORD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two students were struck by a vehicle driven by another student outside Hartford Union High School on Thursday, Nov. 30.
According to police, it happened just after 7:00 a.m.
Police say two female students were hit while walking in a crosswalk. The student in the striking vehicle was turning left from Cedar Street onto West Monroe Avenue.
"People were thinking it had a lot to do with kids and new driving, and I'm sure that has something to do with it, but I think it's everyone. I've seen, even in the summertime, I've seen adults, parents with kids in the back seat speeding past the house," said Brandi Meyer, a neighbor.
The two students who were struck were injured and taken to Aurora Medical Center for treatment. It is unknown how severe their injuries are.
Police say at that time of day, the intersection is busy with both vehicle and pedestrian school-related traffic.
While the crash is currently under investigation, inattentive driving and speed are believed to be contributing factors.
"Every time you see a member of our family impacted, it hurts, it hits home. It also serves as a great reminder that we're in this together, and it's our responsibility to provide support." said Jeff Walters, Hartford Union High School Superintendent.
"When one car's sitting there, they're not sure exactly who's going to proceed, who's not going to proceed, and again, when students are walking, and we have a large amount of, volume of foot traffic, that complicates the vehicle traffic that we already see," said Walters.
