MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Tonight, nearly 300 students celebrated new degrees at MATC's 2024 general education development and high school equivalency diploma graduation ceremony.

The students honored Monday evening graduated from programs at MATC and five other community-based partners.

Many spoke of the challenges they overcame to make it to this point and walk across the stage.

Samira Alsabki graduated from Social Development Commission. She told the crowd gathered, "My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and self-belief."

Every cap and gown Monday night had a story.

Tabitha Young graduated from YWCA. She said, "I need you all to understand that I had a rough childhood. Since the age of 13 I was my sister's keeper."

Some roads to the MATC stage were longer than others, some more challenging. All of them were celebrated.

Young said, "I am living proof that you can overcome your past and accomplish whatever you put your mind to."

Many of the graduates -including the student speakers- sought out their high school equivalency diplomas after battling legal issues, illnesses, or raising families.

Latasha Thurmond graduated from MATC and told the crowd, "I got my health and my mental health under control. I knew I was ready."

Proud graduates -and their families- spoke time and again of resiliency, of the dedication required to balance school and family and work, and of doing it with varying levels of support.

Thurmond said, "Take this first step today and seek out your opportunities to learn and grow. And continuously strive and develop as individuals. Congratulations graduates."

In total, 280 new graduates walked across the MATC stage, ready to tackle the next stages of their lives now with diplomas in hand.
