After rapper Flavor Flav’s social media post, Kenosha dentist steps in to help 11-year-old
Shirley Tutor-Perez KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) — You may remember the story about a rapper who used their star power to help a Kenosha family get their child dental care. We have an update.
Eleven-year-old Rhiannon needs multiple root canals, including her adult front teeth. Her grandmother, Shirley Tutor-Perez, said she worried about what that could mean for her granddaughter.
“I couldn’t see her at 11 having partials or having teeth that are in any way going to get her made fun of,” Tutor-Perez said.
The first estimate from another dental office was nearly $5,000, an amount the family could not afford. Tutor-Perez shared their story online, and rapper Flavor Flav responded with a donation. Tutor-Perez said their GoFundMe almost tripled overnight, and it now sits close to $2,000.
Flavor Flav later asked on social media if any local dentists could help. Children’s Dentistry of Kenosha responded and offered to see Rhiannon, scheduling an appointment within three days. Tutor-Perez said the office did not charge for the visit.
“They didn’t charge for yesterday’s visit, yesterday’s visit was free,” she said.
At the appointment, Rhiannon’s aunt explained what the family could afford. Tutor-Perez said the office told them not to worry about payment immediately.
“I can only afford $800 a month, they were like don’t worry about that right now, let’s just get her mouth taken care of,” she said.
Tutor-Perez said the visit brought relief and new answers about what caused Rhiannon’s dental problems. The previous explanation that ADHD medication was causing the issues was incorrect.
“It’s not. It wasn’t her medication, she's a mouth breather and she needs assistance brushing her teeth,” she said.
Tutor-Perez said the dentist is willing to work with the family on a full treatment plan.
“They didn’t have to help, and they didn’t have to say today’s free, let’s worry about the payment later,” she said.
Tutor-Perez added that Children’s Dentistry of Kenosha is focused on Rhiannon’s comfort and overall dental health.
“We’re going to a place that cares more about Rhiannon’s comfort as a kid who has autism and they care more about making sure this little girl has a healthy smile,” she said.
While more care is still needed, Tutor-Perez said this was a major step forward and that she is grateful for the support.
CBS 58 reached out to Flavor Flav for comment but has not heard back yet.
