AJ Bombers to close Milwaukee location after 16 years in operation

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee’s AJ Bombers will close its Water Street location late 2025 after 16 years in business, according to a Thursday, June 26 announcement from Benson’s Restaurant Group.
The company, which owns and operates the restaurant, will not renew its lease, set to expire at the end of next year. Benson’s CEO said the decision aligns with a strategic shift in the company's plans.
“You know, there is definitely somewhat of a downturn in the Milwaukee area after COVID hit," said Chris Adams, the COO of Benson Restaurants.
There are many places to get a burger in Milwaukee, but not many places will be surrounded by p-nut bombs and other war memorabilia.
“They always wanted to put together something that was different,” said Adams. “You know, it’s one of our first children.”
AJ Bombers opened in 2009 and gained national attention after a 2010 appearance on the Travel Channel. Employees will reportedly be offered positions at other locations within the restaurant group.
“The burgers here are awesome here. I think this was the first place I had a fried egg on a burger," said Brian Plath, a customer. “I think it’s tough."
Employees say they'll remember the restaurant for its fun and family-oriented atmosphere.
“It’s like family oriented. It’s real different," said Antowon Roby, an employee. “We gonna miss it. Everybody.”
In the months ahead, AJ Bombers will mark its closure with ongoing farewell events that celebrate the restaurant’s nationally recognized burger menu and distinctive décor.
“The 'Berry Burger' --100%, although these cheese curds are really really great too," said Adams.
