'Almost unbelievable': Cows on the loose in Port Washington leave residents stunned
PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Cows took over a cul-de-sac this week after escaping from a local farm.
"They came right across here, right across the front lawn, and were touring everybody's condo," Chuck Curran said.
Curran owns a condo in Rolling Hills Estate and had some unexpected visitors on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
"It was a real surprise to see them in our backyard," Curran said.
Curran tells CBS 58 he counted over 20 cows leaving their tracks and cowpies in his garden.
"I'm going to buy some additional bags of topsoil and fill in where they, they have, like four-inch-deep footprints, through both our left and right flowerbeds," he said.
The animals also made their way into the backyard of Geraldine and James Shaver.
"Almost unbelievable because we've never had anything like that. The deer we see a lot in the fall, but never a cow," Geraldine Shaver said.
The couple watched from inside while the cows paraded through their grass.
"They started to come up near our sidewalk. They were right by the edge of the garage, at least one of them was, and the rest were in the front yard," James Shaver said.
One person who jumped into action was Danielle Santos, who was visiting her mom when the cows arrived, and she decided to take her hand at cow wrangling.
"While I was in the garage, I could hear all this commotion and mooing going on. So, I ran down there to ask if they needed some help," she said. "I didn't want any of the cows to get hurt. I'm a big animal lover, so I did what I could to make sure that they were okay."
Santos said after some hard work, she and a couple of other people got the animals to the farm employees, who returned them to their pens safely.
