MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A pair of local organizations partnered Friday to hold a three-on-three basketball tournament in Milwaukee's Amani neighborhood.
The funds raised are put toward a scholarship for local students.
The tournament is in honor of Mekaila Baskerville.
Mekaila was a Milwaukee artist with a dream of giving back to her community when she was killed back in January of last year. She was just 21 at the time.
Before her passing, Mekaila started this three-on-three tournament to bring her community together and hand out bookbags.
Her mother and the Amani Youth Council are working to make sure her dreams of making a difference stay alive.
"Kids having fun. I want people to know youth can be empowered to do something greater," said Regina Williams, Mekaila's mother. "I want to use this as a conduit to raise money for the scholarship fund I raised in her honor."
This was the fourth annual tournament - the second without Mekaila.
Organizers hope to see the tournament grow so they can raise $2,100 yearly for a scholarship in Mekaila's honor.
