Bald eagle in critical condition with lead poisoning at Wisconsin Humane Society

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee resident found a bald eagle hopping through a neighbor's yard after returning home from a World Series watch party last week, according to the Wisconsin Humane Society. The eagle was still on the ground the next day, and the resident called the group's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for help.

Two licensed rehabilitators picked up the eagle and examined it, the humane society says.

The eagle had its beak open and was struggling to breathe. Its lead test result was so high that the machine could not show a number. X-rays showed two or three tiny metal pieces in its stomach. Staff cannot identify them, but say fishing tackle and ammunition are likely sources that birds can swallow by accident.

Staff say the eagle's breathing has improved, it is more alert and stronger, and it has started eating solid food, but it remains in critical condition. A team from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine also helped evaluate and care for the eagle.

The center says it receives no government funding. Donations toward the eagle's care can be made by clicking here.
