MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A special guest visited the Ronald McDonald House to teach families staying here how to make a healthy snack.

On Monday, Bernie Brewer was invited to join Northwestern Mutual for a cooking class at the Ronald McDonald House.

"Ronald McDonald House is a great partner in bringing joy to families as they're going through a really tough time, and we thought to bring some more of that joy by bringing our partnership with the Brewers together would be a great opportunity," Northwestern Mutual Foundation President Steve Radke said.

While celebrity chef Bernie donned an apron for the day, the healthy cooking class is a monthly event at the Ronald McDonald House.

"Our house is for the whole family," Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin President & CEO Laurie Bertrand said. "So, whether you're the kiddo that's seeking treatment or seeking medical help, we have siblings here too, and support teams around you, so building that comradery and having friends and people in the house just makes the stay a little easier during what really is a pretty tough time for many families."

The charity helps keep families together and promotes the health and wellbeing of children.

"Ronald McDonald House is our home away from home," parent Jenny Shea told CBS 58.

Shea said the work done by the charity lifts a weight off her shoulders as a parent.

"It's one less thing we have to worry about when the kids are over for appointments, in-patient, surgeries, all of that. It's just a safe place for them to come, and they hang out," she said.

While her daughter, who said Bernie is her favorite Brewers player, was not able to attend the cooking class, Shea said she would love the pictures, the cracker jack, and the fact that Bernie stopped by.

"She's going to be really, really excited. So, it was really fun to see him and see him interact with the kids and the adults just as equally," she said. "When you have a child who is going through any illness, any injury, whatever, it's just always so important that they're here for us."
