Brewers battle for 3rd base job

NOW: Brewers battle for 3rd base job

PHOENIX, Ariz. (CBS 58) -- Caleb Durbin is from Lake Forest Illinois. He came up to AmFam Field and Marquette games. The trade from the Yankees excites him. But as he battles for the open third base job, he hears the noise about only being 5'6" tall.

“You definitely hear it,” Brewers Third Baseman Caleb Durbin says. “Like, I hear the noise about it. And that absolutely adds a big chip. And you just, you know, wanna prove others wrong, but also wanna prove yourself right. And that's kind of what it's been about for me, is just trying to get better every year.”

Dunn and Durbin, along with Andruw Monasterio, are currently competing to start at third base. Competition is something Caleb Durbin was used to in the Yankees organization before the trade.

“You know, when you're in competition for a position, everywhere gets better,” Brewers Third Baseman Oliver Dunn says. “They say, like, high tide raises all ships. I think it's just the competition makes everybody better and shows you where you need to improve and gives you a little extra focus.”

Durbin led the Arizona Fall League in steals and lives to get dirty. And at 5'6", Milwaukee will love him.

“Yeah, with the Yankees, it developed a mindset of, you know, to compete because you have to compete there if you wanna have a chance to move up, and you know, hopefully get a shot at the big leagues,” Durbin says. “That's always the goal and it was my goal even there.”

Could his nickname be Blue Collar Durbin, so to speak?

“I mean, yeah. You can call me whatever you want. I just wanna play. I just wanna play, and hopefully the fans enjoy watching me play.”

“When you watch him, it's like, wow, look at that guy,” Brewers Manager Pat Murphy says. “Yeah. I mean he could be a fan favorite also.”
