CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Muskego junior takes down 50-year school record
CBS 58 MUSKEGO, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The old cliche is that "records are made to be broken," even if it takes 50 years.
Muskego junior thrower Ben Kosmatka not only saw a daily reminder of the school's shot put record at practice every day, but also above his bed.
"Every single day I looked at it, and it's kind of what I always wanted," said Kosmatka.
"I've been coaching throws for 31 years now. Every year, my guys have that on their dream list," said Scot Passler, Muskego throwing coach. "That's a huge mark, pretty much every single year, that's on the podium at state."
In Muskego's first outdoor meet of the season, Kosmatka got it.
"That final throw, I got help from the crowd. Everybody was clapping. It was great. And the energy was up and I was able to pop that big one. I just - I knew it right away," said Kosmatka.
Kosmatka throws 57' 6.25", passing Craig Foldy's school record set in 1976. It was the longest-standing boys or girls record in the program.
"I'm glad that someone got it. I'm really, I really am," said Foldy.
Foldy stopped by a Warriors practice to have his picture taken with Kosmatka. The two had never met but knew of each other thanks to Kosmatka's success and their other connection.
"He's actually one of my best friends' girlfriend's grandpa. So, you know, I kind of knew a little bit about him and he lives real close to my house, too," said Kosmatka.
"He worked hard to do it. I'm so proud of him, and I hope he continues to get better," said Foldy. "Five decades is a long time. I'm proud to be a Muskego Warrior and I'm proud to have held that record for 50 years."
Kosmatka has always been goal-oriented since he started. He broke the freshman shot put and discus records and qualified for state as a sophomore last year.
"This year was school record and get on the podium at state. And so far, he's got half of that taken care of," said Passler.
"Now I can really think about staying healthy the rest of the season and hitting my other goals that I have for the year, and ultimately just keep working," said Kosmatka.
Kosmatka finished just off the podium in 10th at state a year ago in the shot put. His record-breaking toss ranks second in the state in Division 1.
