Brewers honor retired nurse, 2-time breast cancer survivor with special surprise
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A retired nurse who has fought breast cancer twice and won both times got a cool surprise Monday, May 19.
Sandy Kafura is a big Brewers fan, and she was taken to American Family Field for some special treatment.
She was greeted at the park by Bernie Brewer and outfielder Daz Cameron. They gave her a custom Brewers jersey, a pink bat to salute her two wins over breast cancer, and she'll be the team's guest for their game against the Orioles Monday night.
Sandy Kafura was first diagnosed in 1991, and early detection, chemo, and radiation gave her one win. Then, last year, she was diagnosed again, and this time she underwent a successful double mastectomy.
"Luckily, it was easier to get ahead of, and surgery, and I would tell any woman early detection is the key and you can always get a new pair of breasts but there's only one you," Kafura said. "So, you really have to get your mammograms and do what you have to do."
Sandy and Daz Cameron also did a little painting during Monday's surprise celebration.
