Brewers' win streak puts George Webb's free hamburger promotion in reach 🍔
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- George Webb is preparing to revive its traditional hamburger giveaway if the Brewers are able to secure a 12th consecutive win in their Tuesday, July 22 game against the Seattle Mariners.
"Cook me a burger," said Walter Redmond, who is from Milwaukee and goes to George Webb every day. "I'm ready for my burger, soon as they win, they are going to win.”
The restaurant chain confirmed Tuesday that it is preparing for the possibility of free hamburger distribution. The "12 in a Row" promotion dates back to the 1940s and has only been triggered twice, in 1987 and 2018, when the team achieved at least 12 straight victories.
"When they win, that’s it, I’m going to be the first one to get my burger," said Redmond.
In previous years, George Webb distributed more than 250,000 total burgers across both promotions.
Todd Sum, who is from Greenfield, was one of many hometown fans who got a free burger back in 2018. It's a moment he wanted to remember forever, so he persevered the burger and put it in a box filled with mementos from the big game.
"There was a story about a guy from '87, had like a couple of them in the freezer, I think," said Sum. "So, my gears started going and I thought, I can one-up that. All I did was let it get hard, and then I sprayed it with some clear coat, probably about 20 times."
Sum got the burger at the George Webb in Hales Corners and now is proud to show off his one-of-a-kind piece of history.
"This was the last time the Brewers won 12 in a row," said Sum. "One of the free burgers that we got. I thought it would be kind of neat to keep it for history or make a one-of-a-kind collectable.”
A designated day and time for the burger giveaway has yet to be announced but will happen if the winning streak is extended.
