BROWN DEER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The hunt is on—and it’s getting intense.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Brown Deer Medallion Hunt remains unsolved, even after the release of the fifth clue earlier in the day. But that hasn’t stopped a wave of determined searchers from flooding into the village’s parks and green spaces, spurred by the promise of a $2,000 prize and dinner for four at Café Corazón.

Most of the action appears to be focused on a narrow stretch of land just off the Oak Leaf Trail, south of the fire station and west of N. Deerbrook Trail. By late morning, hunters estimated about 100 people were on site—some crawling through tall grass and others bushwhacking through brush.

“It’s supposed to be in the tall grass here somewhere,” said medallion hunter Alex Paszkowski. “People are getting on their hands and knees, crawling and sifting through all the brush and everything. They’re really getting into it.”

Clues are written by Brown Deer Village Manager Tyler Burkart and are meant to challenge and entertain. Past clues have referenced ongoing development projects and new public spaces in the village. This year's hunt, now in its second year, is part of a broader effort to encourage residents to explore and engage with their community.

While many hunters have clustered around the future site of Ten Mile Park, others—like Sabrina Jordan—are forging their own paths.

“My daughter disagrees with me,” Jordan joked. “But I’m the mother.”

Jordan was searching Village Park, a site that hasn’t seen quite as much attention from the crowd. Still, she says the spirit of the event goes beyond the prize.

“I haven’t seen anyone be uncivil,” she said. “People are encouraging to each other.”

The grand prize may only go to one person or group, but participants say there are plenty of smaller wins along the way: fun, fresh air, and a rare excuse to chat with strangers.

“It’s just fun,” said Anthony Still. “You feel like a kid—you get out and look for something. It’s even just fun watching other people come out.”

Organizers say the hunt will continue until the medallion is found. Clues are posted every Tuesday and Friday morning on the Village of Brown Deer website.
