Friday Night Football: Arrowhead, Homestead among Friday night winners
(CBS 58) — Thursday provided plenty of excitement to kick off Week 1 of the Wisconsin high school football season, and Friday night followed with major upsets, clutch performances and lopsided victories across the state.
CBS 58 was at six games across the greater Milwaukee area, beginning with the defending state champions at Arrowhead.
Arrowhead matched up with Marquette, which was looking to bounce back from an uncharacteristically down season a year ago. The Warhawks began their title defense with a convincing 35-7 victory.
The Homestead Highlanders traveled to Germantown to take on the Warhawks in one of the tighter contests of the night. Homestead came away with a 24-18 victory.
A new era is underway for Franklin football, and the Sabers entered the season hoping to continue their recent run of success. Racine Case had other plans, using its home-field advantage to earn a 20-10 victory.
In a battle of the Warriors, Waunakee and Muskego went head-to-head, with Muskego coming away with a 24-7 win.
Waukesha South's offense erupted for 49 points while its defense shut down West Bend East in a 49-7 victory.
A little farther north, Port Washington and Sheboygan North both found success offensively, but the Pirates pulled away for a 39-20 win over the Golden Raiders.
St. Francis controlled its matchup with Brookfield Academy from the start, cruising to a 50-0 victory.
Elsewhere around the greater Milwaukee area, Kenosha Bradford put up 52 points in a 52-12 victory over Badger.
Kenosha Indian Trail's defense kept Westosha Central off the scoreboard as the Hawks earned a 14-0 shutout victory over the Falcons.
Hortonville and Greenfield played one of the closest games of the night, with Hortonville escaping with a 28-27 win. South Milwaukee also rolled past Cudahy, 55-7.
Milwaukee Lutheran and Waukesha North produced another high-scoring battle, with the Northstars coming out on top, 42-36.
Reigning Division 3 state champion Grafton opened its season with a 14-10 loss to Mount Horeb/Barneveld.
Farther north in northeastern Wisconsin, Wisconsin commit Kingston Allen delivered one of the biggest individual performances of Week 1. Allen carried the ball 18 times for 267 yards and four touchdowns in just the first half as Notre Dame Academy battled Neenah.
The teams were tied 50-50 at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime. Allen finished the night with seven touchdowns and more than 450 yards as Notre Dame Academy ultimately prevailed, 56-53.
Week 1 is officially in the books, giving teams their first look at where they stand and what needs to improve. After an opening week filled with dramatic finishes, standout performances and a few surprises, thousands of players across Wisconsin now turn their attention to Week 2.
