MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The snack that squeaks has its own holiday. National Cheese Curd Day is Oct. 15, and businesses across Milwaukee are cooking up special flavors for hungry customers.
Culver's, who originated National Cheese Curd Day back in 2015, is rolling out their new Hot Honey Curds beginning today. The restaurant known for butter burgers and custard is also serving the Curderburger, which began as an April Fool's joke, but was willed into reality by hungry customers.
Saz's State House and Drink Wisconsinably are getting into the spirit of the day. Lakefront Brewery is celebrating with three new flavors. Mike Walker, on-site business development for Lakefront, says three of their most popular specialty flavors are being served to customers on Tuesday. "The chicken fried cheese curds with 11 spices, the General Tso's sweet savory spice, and the chocolate chip cookie dough cheese curds," Walker said.
Fried cheese curds appear to have originated in ancient Rome, cold curds can be traced back to medieval era France, but it is in modern day Wisconsin that the snack was perfected. We caught up with Zac Duarte while he was enjoying some cheese curds at Lakefront; he says anyone who hasn't tried Wisconsin's signature dish is missing out.
"I mean that is what you tell everyone who comes to visit, they need to try the cheese curds," he said.
