Chicago brings deep-dish to Milwaukee's food insecure community after loss to Brewers

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee’s big win over the Cubs is still paying off and feeding hundreds.

It started as a friendly bet between Chicago and Milwaukee’s archbishops and ended with deep-dish pizza served to dozens of people right here in Milwaukee. A final taste of victory over the Cubs before the Brewers move on to the Dodgers.

“Look at this sauce. The sauce, the cheese. That’s a good blend,” said Darnell Finch.

Finch is just one of many people who line up at the Open Door Cafe at Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist waiting for their next meal.

“I’m glad we won. I think we deserve it more,” said Finch.

At the start of the NLDS, Archbishop Jeffery Grob of Milwaukee and Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, made a bet – the losing city would send the winning city a staple item of their hometown.

“The sportsmanship, the rivalries, those are all pretty human things, but how can we take a deep dive in other dimensions?” said Archbishop Grob.

While the bet was made as a fun nod to the cities' rivalries and cultures, Archbishop Grob says this was a way to include everyone in the excitement, especially those who may not know where their next meal may come from.

“Brewers, we won. Chicago, I’ll see you next year,” said Finch. “I’m not gonna lie, I was hungry. I was very hungry.”

Zachary Sjolund, manager of Open Door Cafe, says hundreds of people line up for their next meal.

“We serve about 130 people a day, from homeless people to people that are just struggling and need to find food,” said Sjolund.

Although the Brewers may have beat the Chicago Cubs, Archbishop Grob says he will still deliver 100 brats donated by Bunzel’s to Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood.

“Ultimately, the whole purpose of this was to bring food to the hungry,” said Archbishop Grob.

Because no matter what team you were rooting for, under this bet, everyone is a winner.

“I’m appreciating the deep-dish. It’s very delicious and the company is great,” said Larry Harrell Jr., at Open Door Cafe.

As for this week, a similar bet between Los Angeles and Milwaukee remains to be seen, but Archbishop Grob says he’s ready to place his wager with Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles.
