Christian Yelich is the Brewers' 2023 nominee for the Robert Clemente Award
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- MVP Christian Yelich has been named the Brewers 2023 nominee for the Robert Clemente Award -- one of baseball's most prestigious individual honors acknowledging community and philanthropic commitment.
This is Yelich’s first time receiving the honor.
The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.
On Friday, Sept. 15, Major League Baseball will honor Clemente's legacy on the 22nd annual Robert Clemente Day and formally acknowledge Club nominees of the award.
Friday evening, as the Brewers take on the Washington Nationals at American Family Field, Brewers players and coaching staff will wear a #21 tribute patch. In addition, Yelich will wear #21 on his uniform, as will Victor Caratini, Andruw Monasterio, William Contreras, Willy Adames, Joel Payamps, Carlos Santana, Abner Uribe, Freddy Peralta, Elvis Peguero and coach Néstor Corredor.
“It means a lot to me to be the Brewers Roberto Clemente Award nominee,” said Yelich. “Roberto Clemente set the standard for service and leadership in baseball and I am honored to support his legacy. A special thank you to my family, the Brewers organization, the city of Milwaukee and my teammates for their support.”
