City of Glendale holds STEM activities for Women's History Month

GLENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Today, the City of Glendale kicked off Women's History Month with STEM activities for girls.

Local scientists set up hands-on experiments at Lincoln Park.

The event gives young women a chance to explore career options and fields of study.

According to a report from the U.S. Census, women represented 27% of STEM workers in 2019 -- up from 8% in 1970.

Organizers say women still face many barriers when it comes to science, and showcasing careers can help break down those barriers.

"To be able to showcase that there are a wide variety of women in science and to be able to connect them with those people is really important," said Brooke Gilley, a park naturalist for the Wehr Nature Center.

Organizers at the Wehr Nature Center are hoping to partner with the Milwaukee County Zoo to hold this event at the zoo next year.
