MILWAUKEE (CBS  58) -- A Greenfield man is now charged in the crash that killed a Milwaukee mother of five.

William Lee is charged with first degree reckless homicide in connection to the death of 41-year-old Elaine Corbitt.

Officers responded to the scene of the crash near 94th and Wilbur just before 7 p.m. the night of Jan. 13.

According to the criminal complaint, the crash occurred in a residential area with a posted speed limit of 25 mph. A debris trail led officers to a tree that appeared to have been struck by the vehicle.

Responding officers noted the debris spanned almost an entire city block, with the hood of the car located about 115 ft. away, in the backyard of a residence. Prosecutors say a home about 75 ft. away had also been struck by large vehicle parts.

First responders removed both Lee and Corbitt from the vehicle, according to the complaint -- Corbitt was pronounced dead at the scene and Lee was taken to an area hospital for assessment.

Prosecutors say Lee told officers he'd had a couple of beers around 3 p.m., and a standardized field sobriety test showed signs of impairment.

Investigating officers spoke with a witness, according to the complaint, who recalled seeing a car driving at a high rate of speed and almost striking both herself and other drivers. Another witness said they had to hit their brakes to avoid being struck by the speeding vehicle, and eventually saw the driver swerve and hit a tree. They said they saw the vehicle fly backwards into the middle of the street due to the force of impact, before catching fire.

Prosecutors say data collected by officers from the vehicle showed the car was traveling at 98.8 mph at the start of the crash, with Lee applying 100% throttle. Officers noted that in the five seconds leading up to the crash, the brake was never applied.
