Congresswoman Gwen Moore calls for release of man framed for threatening to kill President Trump
DODGE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS58) - Congresswoman Gwen Moore is standing behind the man detained after he was apparently framed for threatening to kill President Donald Trump.
Moore visited Ramon Morales-Reyes at the Dodge County jail. Moore says Ramon Morales-Reyes is wrongfully detained and is asking for his release.
54-year-old Morales-Reyes was detained by ICE last month after they received a letter alleging he was going to assassinate the president. But officials later discovered he was set up by a man, Demetric Scott, who had allegedly previously assaulted Morales-Reyes. He then admitted to police he framed Morales-Reyes so he wouldn't testify in Scott's upcoming trial.
Congresswoman Moore, during her visit, tells us that Morales-Reyes' medical needs are being met, and he says he feels no animosity to the man who supposedly framed him.
She expressed frustration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for spreading misinformation, since their website still shows his mugshot with inaccurate information.
Morales-Reyes is in the United States awaiting approval of his U-Visa, but ICE is looking to deport him.
She tells us she's worried about what this means for other victims like him: "were we to just deport him, the message would be loud and clear that the traffickers out there, batterers and murderers, that anything you do to an immigrant will be just fine because you can threaten them by their immigration status"
Moore is submitting a request to DHS to take the misinformation down and clarify what actually happened.
She says she was supposed to be accompanied by ICE during the visit at Dodge County Jail, but she says they weren't there.
She's been trying to get some answers from them since then.
Meanwhile, Morales-Reyes will be back in court for a bond hearing on Tuesday.
