MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Courage MKE has received thousands of dollars in donations after one of their properties was broken into and destroyed in April, setting the LGBTQ advocacy group back financially upwards of $40,000.
Courage MKE bought property to turn into an apartment, C2 Apartments, for LGBTQ youth at risk of being homeless, but before the paint could dry the building was broken into.
"We are still waiting and working with insurance, going back and forth with that right now," said Brad Schlaikowski, executive director of Courage MKE.
And while Schlaikowski waits, thousands of dollars have come flooding in.
"The generosity that just pours in, so we can keep open, so we can keep focusing on opening this building for these kids, has been amazing," said Schlaikowski.
Schlaikowski went on to say the money raised so far has gone to the apartments' operational cost.
"We had to have the heat on, we had to have the water running here, so we were able to replace everything."
Schlaikowski is hopeful the apartments will be move-in ready come November.
"It’s a huge, lofty goal, but they are out there on the street, and we need to get them off as soon as possible, especially before it gets cold. The rainbows are out, and the community is just so giving and it's so amazing."
