Dane County deputy dies of COVID-19

DANE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Deputy Richard "Rick" Treadwell, 61, of the Dane County Sheriff's Office, died due to complications of COVID-19.

Officials say all evidence indicates that Deputy Treadwell contracted the virus while on duty and his death is being treated as a line of duty death. His death is the first COVID-19 law enforcement line of duty death in Wisconsin. 

Treadwell was escorted from the hospital to the funeral home by a law enforcement procession. 

Treadwelll leaves behind his wife and three adult children. 

Funeral arrangements with Law Enforcement honors are currently pending.

According to a news release, Treadwell was sworn in as deputy sheriff in 1995 and promoted to the rank of DIII-Training Deputy in 2000. Treadwell was a member of the Dane County Sheriff's Office training team. Officials say he was a Recruiter, EVOC Instructor, Firearms Instructor and CPR Instructor. He also instructed at the DCSO Jail Academy and Law Enforcement Academy.
