Dogs attack grandmother on Milwaukee’s east side, neighborhood's second dog attack in less than a week

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Milwaukee police say they are investigating a case of a 76-year-old grandmother who was bit by two dogs on Milwaukee’s east side on Sunday, March. 29

According to police, they responded to a home near Hamilton and Humboldt around 11:15 a.m. The victim’s neighbor, Cari Taylor-Carlson, said she saw the police response.

“The police had just gotten here and they had wrapped her head in something and shortly after that, the fire department arrived and two more police cars arrived,” Taylor-Carlson said. “All I can say was it was ugly.”

The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-fatal injuries. A woman who identified herself as the granddaughter of the victim said the attack was unprovoked. She said the 76-year-old is resting and in recovery after the incident.

“She is afraid of dogs, has always been afraid of dogs, that’s what her son told me. That’s awful to begin with, but it just makes it worse,” Taylor-Carlson said. “It’s very traumatic, I feel badly for her. Very badly for her.”

Both dogs were quarantined by the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Center (MADACC). A spokesperson said they were called by police to assist in seizing the mixed breed dogs to hold for quarantine as the Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) investigates.

According to a spokesperson for DNS, there can be a range of consequences for dogs and their owners in the case of an attack.

“This could be mild, like quarantine and requiring the owner to obtain a license or vaccinations (if evidence of either is absent). The most severe consequence is determining an animal to be prohibited dangerous. This requires the owner to remove the dog from the city or humanely euthanize the animal,” DNS Marketing and Communications Officer Jeremy McGovern said in an email to CBS 58.

DNS Marketing and Communications Officer Jeremy McGovern said the case is still under investigation and it can take days to process.

The City of Milwaukee places special requirements on owners of dogs that are one half or more pit bull or rottweiler. MADAC said the dogs are altered and current on all vaccinations.

The owner of the dogs, who spoke to CBS 58 on Sunday, said the attack happened in the yard behind their home and did not wish to comment further on the situation.

Last week, a person and their dog were injured after a random dog attack on Brady Street on March 24. CBS 58 obtained video of the incident. The injured 33-year-old sought out medical attention for injuries from the attack, and their dog received treatment for non-fatal injuries at a local vet.

MADACC said to their knowledge, the two attacks are not connected.

The attack from March 24 is under investigation and Milwaukee police are seeking out the unknown owner of the dogs. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7212 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips App
