Driver arrested, accused of fleeing West Allis police, crashing in Bay View
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 19-year-old man is facing charges after police say he fled an attempted traffic stop in West Allis Thursday night, causing a pursuit that ended with a crash in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood.
According to the West Allis Police Department, officers attempted to stop the vehicle near 70th and Washington around 11:45 p.m., but the driver refused to pull over.
Stop sticks were used at 70th and W. Greenfield Avenue, however, police say the suspect continued to flee until losing control on E. Holt Avenue near S. Lenox Street and going over several front yards before crashing.
It appears the car hit a small tree, a street sign, and a small fence before rolling over.
The car landed right outside Al Laska’s bedroom window.
"We heard a big crash, and then we heard all the sirens,” Laska said. “It was really startling."
Laska and his wife looked out the front door to see a dozen police cars.
"They had the guy on the ground, on his belly, handcuffed already,” he explained. “Thank goodness it didn't end up in our bedroom."
Laska called his neighborhood quiet and peaceful, saying he’d never seen anything like this.
“Not in 48 years that we've been here. This is a first,” he said.
Both the driver and a female passenger were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.
Police say the driver was arrested for fleeing an officer, first degree recklessly endangering safety, OWI causing great bodily harm, and operating without a license.
