MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 9-year-old boy, Jonael Zambrano, is dead after being shot early Thursday morning on Milwaukee's north side.

The family told CBS 58 news Zambrano was shot and killed while in his bed.

The bullet holes outside his home told a tragic story about what happened inside.

"We were sleeping, we hear about 10 or 12 shots, then my little cousin got shot," said Maynor Antunez, cousin to Zambrano.

It's an unthinkable scene for Antunez, now picturing life without his cousin.

"He was our family, he didn’t deserve this, what can I say? He didn’t deserve this, he didn’t deserve this," said Antunez.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the shooting happened just after midnight Thursday at an apartment complex on Swan Road.

Zambrano was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

"He was just a child, he got a future, you know?" said Zambrano.

In surveillance video obtained by CBS 58 News, you can see three men walk into the complex.

One of the men takes out a gun and fires into the air.

At a press conference Thursday, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson called on state lawmakers for stricter gun legislation.

"If I get pissed off about these situations that happen when kids get hurt, I would imagine that the people who control gun law in our state, especially in our Legislature, have some feelings about this too," said Mayor Johnson.

"This type of behavior costs too much, families that will be affected forever and this type of recklessness is not welcome in any community in the City of Milwaukee," said Ashanti Hamilton from the Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention.

Zambrano's family has set up a GoFundMe; that link can be found here.

Milwaukee police said they are still looking for unknown suspect(s).

Attorney Michael Hupy, through Milwaukee Crimestoppers, putting up a $10,000 reward as police search for whoever fired multiple shots that spiraled into a northwest side apartment, sadly striking a nine-year-old boy.
