East Troy Electric Railroad earns spot on National Register of Historic Places
CBS 58 EAST TROY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The East Troy Electric Railroad Historic District, a 7-mile rail corridor in East Troy and Mukwonago, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.
The museum made the announcement on Wednesday, June 17.
Built by The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company in 1906-07, the railroad says it is the last remaining segment of the interurban electric passenger rail system that once served southeastern Wisconsin. It once provided passenger and freight service to communities in the area.
"The East Troy Electric Railroad provides an important link to the past," said Steve Thomas, chairman of the East Troy Railroad Museum in the Wednesday announcement press release. "Not only does it represent a part of local history, but the rail corridor provides the experience of passenger travel by electric rail still today."
The Wisconsin Historical Society had previously listed the corridor on the State Register of Historic Places earlier this year. The nonprofit railroad operates 14-mile round trip excursions from its historic East Troy Depot to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago.
The National Register of Historic Places aims to recognize sites that are important to the nation's heritage.
