MADISON, Wis. (AP) — An environmental law center is challenging the approval of a plan to divert water from Lake Michigan for the new Foxconn manufacturing plant.

Midwest Environmental Advocates filed a petition Friday challenging the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' decision to approve a plan to pull millions of gallons of water from the lake daily.

An attorney for Midwest Environmental Advocates says the city of Racine's diversion request tests the integrity of the Great Lakes Compact. The petition claims the DNR unreasonably interpreted a compact requirement that says water transferred from the Great Lakes Basin must be used for public water supply purposes.

A DNR spokesman says the agency received the filing, but hasn't had time to review it.

Foxconn Technology Group began initial work on the site of its $10 billion flat-screen plant in Mount Pleasant this month.
