Funeral held for 3 kids killed in Thanksgiving Day fire in Kenosha
KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On a cold winter day, the weather in Kenosha seemed fitting as a quietness hung in the air. Three hearses lined up outside Great Lakes Church for three sudden losses.
On Thanksgiving night, 10-year-old Rylee, 9-year-old Connor, and 7-year-old Alena Kannin were killed in a deadly fire near 43rd Avenue and 52nd St. Their father, Joshua Kanin, was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
"Me and their dad aren't together, so it was over at their dad's day. I had just had them over Thanksgiving morning, not knowing it was the last time that I was going to see them,” said the children’s mom, Jourdan Feasby, in an interview with CBS 58 last week. "I was so excited for Christmas shopping but now it's just caskets."
A search warrant reveals Joshua Kannin told investigators when he woke up, he saw "a little fire on the kitchen floor” and walked out the front door, panicked and looking for help.
When he went back inside, Joshua told investigators the smoke was too thick, and he made the fire worse by opening the door. Kenosha police seized Joshua's phone after the fire for forensic data but did not find any evidence related to the fire. Police are still investigating the incident.
"It just doesn't seem real yet to me,” said Feasby. "The way that they were so creative, and they loved to draw and color and make videos, and I'm so glad that I have their videos that they made that I get to watch."
Those are the memories Feasby says she’ll hold onto, long after these quiet, somber days.
"Hug your babies and enjoy them this Christmas, because you could've been in my position and you never know when it's the last day,” said Feasby.
