WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- New property assessments were just sent out in Wauwatosa, and there's a wave of frustration for people who own homes there.

Some homeowners say the new numbers are shocking, and a community group is organizing a pushback Monday night.

Residents are gathering at the Fisher Administration Building ahead of Monday's school board meeting. Many say they're facing a tax spike they didn't see coming, and a group calling itself "Tosa 2030" is demanding answers.

Some homeowners saw their assessed property values jump by 50% or 75% - even 90% for a typical Wauwatosa house. That could mean a tax bill increase of over $1,300 in a single year.

The Tosa 2030 group points to what they call financial mismanagement, citing budget overruns, audit red flags, and a proposed $350 million school expansion.

One critic also cites a shift from a commercial to a residential tax base while the mayor blames the real estate market.

Public comment kicks off the meeting at 6 p.m., and organizers are urging people to show up and speak out.
