'Happy to have him home': 4-year-old back with family after West Allis crosswalk crash

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 4-year-old boy is back home tonight after West Allis police say a driver ignored stopped traffic at a crosswalk and hit him.

The child’s family says he’s recovering well, but neighbors are raising concerns about reckless driving.

West Allis police say a driver heading west on National Ave. on Friday night passed cars that were stopped at a crosswalk and hit 4-year-old Isaac as he crossed the street with his grandmother.

His family says the two had just gotten off a bus near the crosswalk and were on their way to Pick ’n Save.

Police arrested a 25-year-old West Allis woman for reckless driving causing bodily harm.

Isaac’s mom, Molly Sylvester, tells CBS 58 he’s doing well now; he’s back home walking and playing. She says he has some scrapes and bruising, but no broken bones.

People who live nearby say they see drivers speeding through the area every day.

Brian Johnson, a nearby resident, said, “I get nervous crossing National. I saw a car blow by that speed limit sign. Two cars blew by at 87 miles an hour.”

Friday’s crash happened just a few weeks after another pedestrian was badly hurt here.

Back in March, a 61-year-old man was hit while crossing National near 70th Street after walking home from the grocery store.

Police said a driver turning onto 70th hit him, leaving him with stitches across his knee.

Neighbors say they’re tired of watching drivers treat this road like a highway.

Johnson said, “I see so much garbage on this street and people just don't care.”

Isaac’s mom says in part:

“Happy to have him home. I also want to remind everyone to be more patient with traffic. This could’ve been a lot worse and I’m just grateful it wasn’t.”
