MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Some University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students are expressing concerns regarding a major change being made by the university.

Starting in the 2026 fall semester, UWM will be moving eight student centers into one student center.

The following centers will be part of the consolidation.

A UWM spokesperson said, “UWM will sustain and strengthen what is working well in these offices and while they will not continue in their existing form, the services and programming they offer will remain.”

Finley Danson is a freshman at UWM and is worried about the access to some resources for her next three years on campus.

“I’m a little worried for what the future holds for the political state of this school," Danson said.

Danson has been to the Women’s Center a couple of times her freshman year and is unsure what will happen to the resources.

“It might be easier, instead of immediately going to a doctor, to go to that resource center,” Danson said. “Now, if they don’t have that, it’s just yet another loss for women in this world.”

Charlie Luchsinger is a UWM junior and understands the value of the centers, but not the changes that are coming.

“They do really good work and combining them all into one big thing, I don’t think will do anyone any good,” Luchsinger said. “I think it’s a really horrible idea because all of these are very specialized issues that affect specific groups of people.”

“Students who have developed strong connections with an individual center will continue to find the support and community they are looking for on campus, and we hope to provide that support and community to even more students with the new center,” a UWM spokesperson said.

Despite the university claiming the resources and access will stay the same, students are worried about the quality of the resources after the move.

“I think that it’s really important to have people and places that you can go to that you know for sure are going to be accepting,” UWM student Faraja Mukome said. “I think it makes the services less useful to the people who really need them.”
