Horse hit, killed by Amtrak train in Caledonia

CBS 58

CALEDONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Caledonia police say a horse has died after running loose and getting hit by an Amtrak Train on Tuesday, July 7.

Police say at around 6:00 a.m. witnesses near Prairie Crossing Drive and County Highway H saw two horses running loose.

Upon arrival, officers and the owners attempted to coral the horses while trying to keep them off the roadway.

While trying to coral them, officers say the horses started running down the train tracks just west of their initial spotting.

Officers notified train companies to request all trains to be stopped, but a northbound Amtrak train could not stop and hit one of the horses.

The second horse was not hit and safely corralled into its enclosure.

Officials say both horses were significantly injured, and a veterinarian from the Sturtevant area was called to the scene and humanly euthanized the first horse.

No passengers of the train were injured.
