Hugh Jackman will visit Milwaukee Tuesday to promote 'Song Sung Blue.' Here's where you can see him
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A special Milwaukee story will hit the big screen this month, and there are some exciting plans in place Tuesday to promote it.
Song Sung Blue is a feature film about Mike and Claire Sardina, known as Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute act performing in Milwaukee in the 1990s.
The new feature film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, and Jackman will make special appearances in Milwaukee on Tuesday, Dec. 2., for the hometown premiere.
The Wolverine actor will first be at Kopp's Frozen Custard in Greenfield, with Song Sung Blue's director, Craig Brewer.
The first 500 people in line at 2:30 p.m. will be served a free scoop of custard by Jackman and Brewer. Kopp's will have a special flavor called "Song Sung Blueberry."
"We're going to be twirling cream cheese custard together with blueberry custard, adding blueberries in and streusel crumble on top, with some powdered, sugar-coated pastry pieces," said Jeff Feist, the manager at Kopp's in Greenfield.
Organizers ask that the line doesn't start forming until 1:30 p.m., as Kopp's will be open their regular hours for the lunch crowd.
"Dress warm, because we don't have a big enough lobby to hold 500 people," Feist said. "You may be waiting outside for a while. So, bundle up, because it's going to be a cold one."
Greenfield police will be there directing traffic and parking.
Later, Jackman and Brewer will introduce two local screenings of the film: first at the Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee at 7 p.m., then at Marcus Majestic Cinema of Brookfield at 8 p.m.
Both showings are invite-only and sold out, but there will be a spot outside the Oriental Theatre for fans to gather and try to catch a glimpse of Jackman's arrival.
"It's really about the character and people of Milwaukee," said Mark Gramz, president of Marcus Theatres. "It's a story about perseverance, and about a passion for music, and passion to keep on living and keep on enjoying what they do."
Gramz calls the film a must-see, and it's one that will have a special connection with longtime Milwaukeeans.
"I remember - going back when I was a kid - remember Lightning and Thunder performing at the State Fair," Feist said. "It was a big deal to go see them; it was iconic."
We will be live on CBS 58 from Kopp's and the Oriental Theatre Tuesday afternoon.
Song Sung Blue opens in theaters nationwide on Dec. 25.
