MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There's a free event happening in Milwaukee this week to protect more vehicles from theft.

Kias and Hyundais have topped lists of the most stolen vehicles for years.

To combat this serious issue, UW-Milwaukee police and Hyundai Motors have teamed up to host a free anti-theft software upgrade event.

Anyone who owns or leases a 2011-2021 Hyundai with a mechanical turn to start key ignition is eligible.

The vice president of Hyundai Motors America says the whole process to update your car should take 30 minutes.

He also says Hyundai has spent a significant amount of money to fix the issues.

"The key for us, is that we know our customers are in a very difficult situation, and if we have the ability to help, let's do something to help," said Dave VandeLinde, VP of Hyundai Motors America.

The event is happening Thursday and Friday, Sept. 5-6, from 8-6 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8-3 p.m.

Software updates and streeting wheel locks will be available at UWM Capitol/Humboldt UPark at 4430N. Humboldt Boulevard (lot number 30).

For steering wheel locks only, you can go to the Merrill Circle surface lot at 2512 E. Hartford Avenue (lot number 12).

No appointment or registration is needed.
