'I am excited': Hometown veteran prepares for Honor Flight to DC

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- We caught up with a Milwaukee veteran who is heading to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight after many years of public service.

Nick Bokas served in the Marines during the Vietnam War for nearly a year. He was supposed to be part of an intelligence unit but decided he wanted to be on the ground fighting.

After graduating from law school at UW-Madison, he spent near 40 years as a public defender in Milwaukee. He now spends retirement giving legal help to immigrants for free.

Bokas and other veterans from the area leave on Saturday for a day trip to D.C. to spend the day honoring their brothers who didn't make it home.

"I am excited about going," said Bokas. "I am looking forward to meeting some of the other veterans on the flight and on the trip, and I am looking forward to going to the wall again."

Bokas and his wife, Pat, have four children and five grandchildren.

Another Milwaukee attorney named David Sanchez will go with him on the trip.
