International Day of Persons with Disabilities: How Independence First is helping people in the Milwaukee community

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Independence First in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood, helps people with technology, education, and resources-- like, loans and grants. They not only advocate for persons with disabilities, but the space is also a model for how kitchens, bathrooms and even bedrooms can be adaptive and inclusive.

"We have over 2,500 different pieces of equipment here," said Marci Boucher. "We just need to know what it is. What assistive technology you might need — maybe it’s a ramp, lighting the doors, some grab bars, or maybe it’s a personal peer worker in your home to help with your daily bathing needs.”

When a wheelchair battery dies or a piece your home equipment breaks, Independence First helps people with these daily issues they face.

They offer more than 40 workshops from art to cooking and life skills training.

But for Boucher and other staff at Independence First, accessibility is just as much about connection as it is equipment.

"It’s much easier to talk with somebody, do support systems and teach on different topics when you yourself have lived experience. So, 50 percent of our staff have a disability, and also 50 percent of our board so top management," said Boucher.
