MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Turkey has been on our Thanksgiving table for generations, some historians date its origin back to the early 1800's.
But if you believe social media, and we admit there is good reason not to do that, turkey might be the subject of a recent "poultry protest."
Check it out, X post after X post, proclaiming the staple of the holiday to be... not that great!
A 2022 survey from Mental Floss found that turkey was the fourth most HATED food on the Thanksgiving table. Turkey was mere decimal points behind green bean casserole, one of the most universally avoided side dishes out there.
The main criticism of Thanksgiving turkey is that it is often dry, needing to be covered in gravy to be good to eat. While the internet will shame people who serve dry turkey, it can't be that simple if there are countless videos out there dedicated to guiding people through the cooking process.
Butterball has kept a hotline open for years for people who have questions about their holiday turkey.
We spoke with renowned local chef Michael Feker who says good turkey takes practice and preparation. Feker says that while turkey will be on his table for Thanksgiving, he doesn't fault people who break with tradidtion and choose other dishes.
"Beautiful things happen around the table, stress is not one of them, you don't need that," he said.
Chef Feker says he has a FOOLPROOF turkey recipe, which you can find right here.
