'It can get pretty reckless down here': New Brady Street safety plan to launch in December

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A big change is coming to Brady Street next month in hopes to make the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians.

"It can be a little hectic," said Aidan Jennings, who lives near Brady Street.

"It can get pretty reckless down here," said Charles Arpin, another local resident.

Those are the words people who frequently walk and drive on Brady Street use to describe their experience on the busy roadway.

"It's also the only place in the neighborhood that I feel like I hear about regular accidents and injuries going on, particularly involving pedestrians," said Jennings.

Residents in the area say the intersection at Humboldt and Brady is one of the problem areas.

"As someone who doesn’t personally own a car and takes public transit, this stop in particular can get a bit messy on the weekends," said Arpin.

To combat this, the Brady Street Improvement District and the Milwaukee Department of Public Works created the Brady Street Traffic Calming Project.

"We want to make sure this is safe for everybody and actually makes enhancements," said Michael Sander, the executive director of the Brady Street Improvement District.

Next month, as part of phase one, the intersection at Humboldt and Brady will turn into a four-way stop.

"The big important thing is this provides safety to the residents who come here, and the visitors," said Sander. "You know, this is one of the most walkable streets in Milwaukee and we need to maintain that and make people feel safe when they are coming down here."

The all-red flashing four-way stop will be a 30-day trial, hoping to reduce speeding and increase pedestrian safety.

"I think it’s a good idea, at the very least, to try it," said Jennings. "I'd like to see where it goes and hopefully make the area more pedestrian friendly as the warmer months come around."

Residents hope this is just the beginning of additional safety measures being added to Brady Street.

"It's nice to hear that there is something happening with it," said Arpin. "Maybe it can lead to a nicer, more calm environment here on Brady Street, because it’s a great street. There is so much to do over here."

Sander says the second phase will happen next fall and that they are looking at adding things like raised crosswalks and bump-outs.

Some residents say they would like to see Brady Street as a fully pedestrian-walkable street with no traffic, much like State Street in Madison.
