'We are family': Union Grove organization helps house veterans in need

UNION GROVE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A local non-profit is stepping up to help veterans when they need it most.

"We are family," said Christine Luxem, the founder of Ground Zero Veterans Outreach, Inc.

From the outside, it looks like your typical farm, but when you move inside, you discover what makes this Union Grove Farm so special is its mission.

"This spot, it’s emergency housing," said Luxem. "They can come up to 60 days and by then we have them in a home, or in a program if that’s what they need."

The home surrounded by farmland temporarily houses homeless veterans and is the heart of Luxem's passion project, Ground Zero Veterans Outreach Inc.

"I have mad respect for veterans," said Luxem. "For them to take their turns, go away from their family, to protect us. I guess I couldn’t think of a better group of people who I wanted to give back to."

The Farm Oasis has been around for a year and is a project Luxem is continuing to grow, adding a garden, animals and soon an art room and wood working shop to provide outlets for veterans as they get back on their feet.

"Animals are very good therapy for veterans, so I thought I’d be a good idea to grow our vegetables, fruit and our meat here," said Luxem. "That will not only feed the people who are staying here, but we have a food pantry in downtown Union Grove."

One veteran says even though he no longer lives there, it's become his second home and continues to come back to help around the farm.

"I was looking for a place to stay and didn’t have a place to move into right away and this opportunity happened to just present itself at the right time," said the local veteran.

The farm is helping him find purpose.

"For me, in general, it’s something to do, but it’s taking care of things other than yourself."
