'It’s the place to be': Deer District farmer's market makes its debut
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Deer District's new farmer's market made its debut on Sunday.
"It’s the place to be," said Latoya Bates, the Deer District Market Manager.
Now, as you make your way through the Deer District on Sunday's, you can get a taste of what southeastern Wisconsin has to offer.
"It brings people together." said Brian Wojcik, vendor with Amy's Candy Kitchen. "People get to try different things and people in Milwaukee may not always get to try something from Cedarburg, so it just broadens everyone’s horizons."
Sunday marked the grand opening of the Deer District's new farmer's market, bringing fun for the whole family.
"Farmer's markets do such a great thing for our community," said Bates. "They boost our economy, but they also give our farmers a distribution network and they support small businesses."
Bates says she saw a need in the community and wanted to fill that gap with local resources.
"We have grocery stores that are closing," said Bates. "We have still some food deserts out there, and this is an area that is both filled with families that are food insecure and filled with families and folks that work here that are affluent. We have this opportunity to just get everyone together, provide some wholesome good healthy food options."
Local farmers and business owners say being able to provide their product in the heart of the Deer District is booming for business.
"It’s just a great opportunity to be here," said Valeria Chang, a local farmer. "It’s huge compared to maybe having 30 to like 100 vendors, that’s a huge difference as far as vendors goes. It gives us an opportunity explore."
Featuring more than 100 vendors each week, you can expect live music, fresh food and all sorts of unique finds made from people in the community every Sunday through October.
"Come on out, give it a try and let’s make this big," said Wojcik.
