MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Black Friday is the kickoff for the busiest shopping period of the year.

The National Retail Federation predicts sales this holiday season will be 3.5% higher than last year.

The windchill didn't keep shoppers away from The Corners of Brookfield on Friday, Nov. 29, but some shoppers said it feels different from Black Fridays past.

It's the biggest shopping day of the year, and for many, it can't be missed.

"I just like shopping. It's really fun to spend money," said Claire Caprez from Pewaukee, as she waited in line at Kendra Scott.

"Just the tradition. Like, I do a lot of online shopping, but it's just the tradition of us going out and doing it," said shopper Katie Hanson from Port Washington.

Some shoppers make getting good deals a family affair.

"We're just going to do some Christmas shopping, and just enjoy the nice decorations, and enjoy some family time," said John Swanson as he shopped with his children. "Hopefully get a good portion of the Christmas list knocked out."

However, many shoppers say the Black Friday rush seems to have slowed down the last few years.

"Being Black Friday, I was kind of thinking it might be a little more hectic and chaotic, but I'm okay with this," shopper Katie Swanson said.

The Corners of Brookfield saw a steady stream of shoppers Friday, but crowds were manageable, and stores were quick.

"Obviously you have a little bit more of that online shopping, but I think there's still a huge demographic of people that love to come in store, and touch and feel, and try things on," said Jordyn Fischer, marketing manager for The Corners.

Whether it's in-store or online, shoppers say the sales are worth it.

"I just think it's really fun, everyone's in a really good mood, and there's really great deals," said shopper Mackenzie Caprez.

The Corners have extended shopping hours until 9 p.m. on Black Friday.

Saturday is their annual tree lighting ceremony, emceed by CBS 58's own Alex Corradetti.
