Judge approves release plan allowing Morgan Geyser to move into group home

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Morgan Geyser, the then-12-year-old who stabbed her classmate to please fictional horror character Slender Man, has been granted release after the Department of Human Services suggested a facility change.
Geyser will move out of the Winnebago Mental Health Institute and into a group home in the Sun Prairie area. Less than two weeks ago, Geyser was granted release to a home in an unknown location, but not near the Milwaukee or Waukesha area.
In 2014, Geyser and her classmate Anissa Weier stabbed their friend, 12-year-old Peyton Leutner, 19 times.
Geyser and Weier believed the stabbing would please the fictional character Slender Man. Geyser and Weier were found not guilty by reason of mental defect in 2017.
Thursday morning, the Sun Prairie city attorney raised concerns about Geyser's new facility being in close proximity to schools and a neighborhood but did not have grounds to object to her release.
"People should be aware of what is going on in their community, but people have to be released somewhere, and so if you permit cities to object, then you'd have everybody objecting and you'd never release people," said Geyser's attorney, Anthony Cotton.
Geyser's release had been postponed several times prior. In April, the Leutner family raised concerns about Geyser's group home being eight miles from their house.
Geyser's attorney says this new facility will allow Geyser to interact with other individuals close in age and participate in activities like sewing, knitting, and gardening.
