MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's Juneteenth celebration is bringing back an event that hasn't happened for six years. It's the "Freedom Ball."
The Freedom Ball is a fundraising event to provide scholarships for young African-Americans through a Miss and Mr. Juneteenth pageant.
It's scheduled for June 11, eight days before the Juneteenth festival and it will be held at the Milwaukee County Zoo's Peck Pavilion.
Tony Kearney from the planning committee says the overall goal of the Juneteenth celebration is exposure.
"We want folks to see us. To see the best of the African-American community. They see a lot of negative stuff. We want them to actually see us and understand who we are," said Tony Kearney, Juneteenth Planning Committee.
The Freedom Ball is set for Saturday, June 11. A limited number of tickets are available.
