1 person dead, dog rescued after house fire breaks out in Mequon
MEQUON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One person died as a result of a fire that broke out inside a house in Mequon early Tuesday.
According to a police report, a witness observed flames coming out of a residence located in the 1200 block of W. Mequon Road, near North Granville Road at around 2:49 a.m.
Multiple crews, including from Southern Ozaukee, Grafton, Port Washington, and Milwaukee, joined to combat the fire, which a local neighbor told CBS 58 News, took hours to put out.
Authorities confirmed they discovered a body at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. They have yet to identify the victim.
Patrick Simpson said the homeowner, whom police have not yet identified, has been friends with his parents for years.
"My aunt texted my mom, saw that the house was on fire, everybody just went, you know, kind (of) crazy knowing the house was on fire, so I called his son, and I hung out with him, made sure he was OK, and I figured on my way home, I'd stop and see the house," he said.
Simpson said that since he was young, he would always come to visit. He had last been over to dinner about a month ago.
Officials also rescued a dog from inside the home and the pet was later transported to a nearby Humane Society.
Police also said they located a vehicle at the residence, which was believed to belong to the homeowner.
The police report stated that family members were contacted and last heard from the homeowner at approximately 3 p.m. Monday and confirmed he should be the only one at the residence.
