MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Ascencion Wisconsin says winter storms tend to bring in more people to their emergency rooms.

People slipping on ice and car accidents are some of the common injuries they see, but even shoveling snow can be dangerous.

Research shows shoveling or even pushing a snowblower may increase the risk of a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest.

The effort and energy it takes can put a strain on the heart.

A cardiologist with Ascension Wisconsin told us what people should keep in mind if they're shoveling.

"Do not rush into it," said Dr. Alexander Smolensky. "Don't expect to clear your driveway in 10 minutes. Take your time. Take 30 minutes. Take breaks, ask the kids for $15 to help you."

Even if you don't think you'll be outside shoveling for very long, be sure you dress appropriately. Stay warm. The cold weather can contract your blood vessels, putting more strain on your heart.
