WEST BEND, Wis. (CBS 58) — A 40-year-old man accused of repeatedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend and injuring her daughter in Germantown was found guilty Thursday.

A Washington County jury convicted Melvin R. Hintson-Reed of attempted first-degree intentional homicide with use of a dangerous weapon and child abuse by recklessly causing bodily harm with use of a dangerous weapon.

The charges stem from a June 15, 2025, attack in which prosecutors said Hintson-Reed stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times. One of the stab wounds cut her heart and nearly killed her.

During the attack, the woman's daughter attempted to protect her mother by placing herself between her and Hintson-Reed. Prosecutors said Hintson-Reed slashed the daughter's hand while continuing to stab her mother.

After the attack, Hintson-Reed was found in Indiana, where authorities said he fled from law enforcement in a semitruck before driving off a bridge.

"This case reflects both the horror of extreme violence and the extraordinary strength of the human spirit," Washington County District Attorney Barry Braatz said. "The adult female victim's remarkable resilience and will to survive, combined with the quick thinking and heroic bravery of her daughter, undoubtedly saved a life that day."

Braatz said the daughter showed "incredible courage under unthinkable pressure" by placing herself in harm's way to protect her mother.

Hintson-Reed faces up to 53 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 16 at 8:30 a.m.
